Colourful Crete holiday town 'could get brighter in April'
According to Whatsonwhen, Agios Nikolaos' Easter celebrations culminate in a dynamite evening of explosions and flames to illuminate a holiday in Crete.
It claims that throughout the year, the "colourful" town is an "infamous treasure trove of archaeology, Greek history and myth", but in April it really could be the place to be in Crete.
On the night of Easter Sunday, thousands of locals gather round a beautiful lake lined with red rocks and conifers holding candles to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
"The tension heightens as an effigy of Judas is set alight, but the silence is swiftly broken by the sounds of scores of firecrackers," the website adds.
Agios Nikolaos is renowned for its beaches and those that surround the resort - including Almyros, Ammoudara, Havania, Ammoudi - have all been awarded the famous Blue Flag.
