Check out the Heraklion Summer Festival on a Crete holiday

Heraklion's annual summer festival is now underway, offering culture and entertainment for travellers to enjoy during Crete villa holidays.

Due to run until mid-September, the event will bring a range of opera productions, ballet performances and other events to venues across the city.

The Heraklion Summer Festival is one of Crete's best-known and most prestigious cultural events, having played host to companies such as the Kirov Opera and the Bolshoi Ballet in the past.

It also serves as a showcase for new and upcoming performers based in Greece.

Art enthusiasts planning a Crete villa holiday this summer will be able to visit some of the island's cultural institutes to see the exhibitions that will be showing as part of the festival.

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and also its largest city and one of the island's most important ports.

People planning to visit the destination during a summer break can see landmarks such as the Minoan palace of Knossos and the Venetian castle of Koules in the harbour.
