Celebrate the Chestnut Festival on a Crete holiday

Summer may be drawing to an end in the UK but that doesn't mean families have to put their holiday plans on hold until next year.

Those who fancy Crete villa holidays can still travel to the island in the autumn when the weather is still pleasant, although not quite as hot as it is in summer.

And what better way to enjoy an autumn break than to head to the village of Elos to celebrate the annual Chestnut Festival with the locals in October.

Situated in the Ennio Khoria village district near Kissamos, Elos can be reached easily by those renting Crete villas in Stalos.

Every year it hosts the event to show off the chestnuts it has harvested, offering up sweet and savoury dishes for visitors to try.

According to What's on When, there will also be traditional local entertainment.

Elos can be reached by car from Stalos - a small resort in Chania that has a variety of tavernas, shops and bars.

Holiday makers staying here can also take a boat trip out to the island of Theodorou, which is just a short distance out to sea from the coast.
