Cave of Zeus: Crete
The Greek island of Crete has many untouched and unspoiled areas for tourists to take their holidays, but there are also many attractions that will tempt visitors away from the villa.
One of these attractions is the Cave of Zeus, which overlooks the Lassithi Plateau.
Greece is steeped in ancient history with tales and legends being passed through the ages, and Crete is no different, holidaymakers can immerse themselves in the mythology of Zeus when they visit the cave.
Zeus was hidden in the cave by Rhea so that the murderous Cronos would not find him, and he grew up in the cave.
Legend states that Zeus also used to bathe in the cave and archaeologists believe it was an important site.
Holidaymakers can go into the cave and see where the archaeologists uncovered many icons and symbols that confirm the area as a place of worship, and most of these are found near to the pool where Zeus would bathe.
Visiting the caves which are lit up by electricity will be a fascinating excursion for travellers who want to understand the mystery and legend behind one of the most famous Greek gods.
The cave is located east of Heraklion.
