Book a Crete villa holiday and explore the island's tavernas

Holiday makers renting a Crete villa may wish to try out some of the island's many tavernas, which have been praised by one visitor.

Travel writer Catherine Mack highlighted Crete's many tavernas, which are an important part of the Greek island's culture, as one of the highlights of her recent trip there.

"Every beach in Crete has a taverna," she noted. "They are everywhere else, too: our village had three, all excellent."

Ms Mack also listed some of her favourite, which could well be worth checking out for people enjoying a break in a Crete villa.

Taverna Aptera and Strata Taverna in Megala Chorafia were listed, as was the Cretan Corner; all of these stay open all day and night during the holiday season.

She also highlighted Fish Tavern Apostolis, which is situated close to Chania market, on the waterfront next to a lighthouse, and offers some of the finest Cretan fish delicacies in an exquisite seafront location.

It was recommended that Crete holiday makers visit the folklore museum in Gavalohori, a repository of Cretan tradition that collects potteries, coins and costumes from bygone eras.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and offers plenty of outdoor activities, including walking trails, water sports, scenic drives and snorkelling.
