Book a Crete holiday for a culture fix

Those hoping to get a culture fix during their time abroad should consider a Crete holiday, where there is more than just sand and sea on offer.

According to Angela Gerekou, deputy culture and tourism minister for Greece, the island, and indeed the rest of the country, is looking to capitalise on its culture.

She said Greece has long been an attractive destination for families enjoying beach holidays, as its islands have a warm climate and beautiful scenery.

But there is more to Crete than just its sandy beaches, as holiday makers will fin out if they get out and about.

Ms Gerekou said the task for Greece's tourism industry now will be to communicate this message to travellers.

"We need to give Greek tourism a new identity in the market it deserves," she remarked.

There are numerous historical and architectural gems waiting to be uncovered in Crete, including the ancient ruins of the labyrinth in Greek mythology.

Holiday makers will also find evidence of Roman, Venetian and Turkish culture, from mosques to monasteries and winding cobbled streets.

Those renting Crete villas in Bali will be in a great location to do some exploring, as the resort lies in the centre of the island in the north coast.
