Blue flag record for beaches in Crete
Crete has more hallmark 'blue flag beaches' than any other island on Greece, it has been revealed.
A total of 97 blue flags will be flown on the island this summer: 27 in Chania, 17 in Rethymnon, 14 in Heraklion and a record 39 in Lassithi. The total also represents an increase of three over last year, and 12 since 2005.
Crete's achievement is particularly impressive when measured against the total of 428 that Greece as a whole was awarded, and goes some way towards confirming the popular perception of the island as having some of the Mediterranean's best beaches.
The blue flag awards were jointly revealed by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, which co-ordinates the blue flag programme in Greece, and Alpha Bank, which funds the programme worldwide.
The blue flag - established in 1987 and now one of the best known eco-labels in the world - measures the water quality and environmental management of a beach, and is flown at the sites which meet its criteria. The presence of a blue flag is often used by tourists looking for clean, safe, pleasant bathing for their holidays.
