Ancient Greek palaces come to life in Crete
Although they may now be in ruins, visitors can still get a sense of the former grandeur of these spectacular buildings.
Knossos Palace is located just a few kilometres south of Heraklion and covers an area of more than 20,000 square metres.
Built around 2000 BC, it is believed to be one of the biggest Minoan palaces in Greece and is a must-see for those interested in architecture and archaeology.
Phaistos Palace is also south of Heraklion and is said to be one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete.
The ancient city of Phaistos, to which the palace is linked, was once one of the wealthiest centres in the Minoan civilisation.
Holiday makers eager to catch a glimpse of these impressive structures could rent villas in Bali, which is just 45 minutes from Heraklion.
The resort itself boasts some dramatic mountain scenery and is home to three small bays, the largest of which is a fishing port.
