1821 memorial festival takes place on a Crete holiday
Taking place today (March 25th), the festival is a celebration of the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
Those leaving the edge of their private villa pool will find Heraklion's main street is filled with army officers as they parade.
History indicates that Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of national rebellion at the monastery of Agia Lavra as the Greeks revolted against their rulers.
Crete was not actually part of Greece until 1913 but the significant moment for the revolutionary movement occurred in 1821 and this is celebrated by the locals.
As well as being one of the most celebrated events in the island's history, it is also one of the most spectacular.
