1821 fight for independence remembered in Crete
Taking place on March 25th is the 1821 memorial parade where Crete's army officers line in rank and file and take to the main streets of Herkalion to commemorate a Greek uprising against Ottoman rule in 1821.
Locals are sure to turn out in force for the event where they cheer on the soldiers in a colourful parade.
The march takes place on the same day that Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of national rebellion at the monastery of Agia Lavra in northern Peleponnese.
The Greeks revolted against the Turks and by 1828 they were independent and in 1821 a group of revolutionaries were active in the mountainous, inaccessible regions causing trouble for the Ottoman rulers.
The parades take place in most areas around the island and church services often precede the parade.
