'History prevails' in Preveli on a Crete holiday
The monastery dates back to the late 16th century and it has a glorious history, with the monks playing a leading role in the island for centuries.
It is both a religious centre and a place of social gathering and numerous icons are kept at the monastery's museum, including ecclesiastical garments, vessels and heirlooms.
As well as the monastery, the beach at Preveli is a virtual oasis with palm trees lining turquoise waters and fine sands.
The beach and surrounding area can be reached by foot from the monastery and is well known for its lush flora and fauna.
Preveli is just a short drive from a host of villas in the small but bustling resort of Platanias, Rethymno, which boasts a long sandy beach and a healthy selection of restaurants and bars to keep holiday makers entertained in the evening.
