According to the Discovering Cartagena website, the beaches around Mar Menor never get crowded, in contrast to places further north and south.
It states that there are 18 official beaches in the area and many more coves for holiday makers to explore.
Most of them have powdery white sand and turquoise sea, while others are rocky and surrounded by dramatic steep cliffs.
Families renting villas on the Costa Calida could rent a car and drive along the coastline in search of some hidden gems.
A villa in Mar Menor could be the perfect base from which to explore. As Discovering Cartagena points out, there are numerous beaches in this area and holiday makers will not have to go far to find their own piece of paradise.
The resort is also home to the Jack Niklaus-designed nine-hole golf course, which could provide a pleasant break from lazy afternoons on the beach.
