Run with Wine Horses on a Costa Calida villa holiday

For one day, riderless horses take to the streets of the town wearing embroidered and decorative coats in a race to celebrate the Festival of the Holy Cross.

Caravaca de la Cruz holds the event every year and it dates back to around 1250 when knights rode across the area to bring wine to those guarding the relic of the True Cross, which has been kept there since 1231.

Nowadays, the 'Wine Horses' gallop through the streets with a porter on each side while spectators line the streets and cheer the competitors on.

Steeped in tradition and history, Caravaca de la Cruz is one of the world's five holy cities and has a shrine to the Lignum Crucis - wood from the cross Jesus was crucified on.
