Witness one of Spain's largest pilgrimages on an April holiday

One of Alicante's most popular festivals, the Santa Faz Pilgrimage sees 200,000 people walk to the Monasterio de Santa Faz.

Setting off at 8am, the pilgrimage has been made since 1489 and takes around two and a half hours, during which time everyone stops for paraeta - a breakfast of anise rolls and mistela wine.

The pilgrims head to the monastery, which houses a relic that is reportedly a veil with which Saint Veronica wiped the bleeding face of Jesus as he carried the cross to Golgotha.

Most of the villas in Costa Blanca can be found the area's most attractive coastal or inland resorts and are well situated for a day trip to Alicante or a day on the area's golden beaches.
