Visit Alcoy's biggest event on a Costa Blanca holiday

Holiday makers who enjoy absorbing local culture during their breaks can book Costa Blanca villas this year and head to the town of Alcoy to experience its biggest annual event.

The Moors and Christians Fiesta will take place between April 22nd and 24th.

Around 5,000 people take part in the festival, which commemorates a battle that was fought in 1276.

At the time, Alcoy stood on the border of Muslim-held territories in Spain and was attacked by the invading armies of Al-Azraq.

The Moors and Christians Fiesta gets underway on the first day with a procession of the different groups who will be taking part in a re-enactment of the battle.

On the second day, a number of festivities take place in Alcoy to celebrate St George - who fought in the conflict, according to legend - before the main event is staged on the third day.

Costa Blanca villa guests will be able to see the battle in Plaza de Espana, where a purpose-built castle is constructed every year.
