See the Bonfires of San Juan on a Costa Blanca holiday

Holiday makers staying in Costa Blanca villas this June will have the opportunity to visit the city of Alicante to attend the annual Bonfires of San Juan festival.

Thousands of people will take to the streets to participate in the event between June 20th and 24th.

The festival is arranged to mark the arrival of summer and is related to the famous Fallas celebrations that are held every year in Valencia.

Introducing the event, the Spanish tourist board states that it creates an atmosphere of "colour ... and extravagance", providing plenty of entertainment for visitors through live music, fireworks displays and parades.

The festivities will get underway on June 20th, with giant bonfires being built around the city, along with cardboard figures that are ceremonially tossed into the flames at midnight on June 24th.

Costa Blanca villa guests will then be able to join in with some of the events that take place after the festival, with a fireworks competition taking place on El Postiguet beach from June 25th to 29th.

There will also be a medieval market and a number of live shows taking place in the centre of town.
