See ancient Spanish monuments on a Costa Blanca villa holiday
According to the city's official tourism portal, there are numerous fortresses, cathedrals and palaces waiting to be discovered in this part of the country.
Holiday makers can head to the Santa Barbara Castle on top of Mount Benacantil for some spectacular views across the bay, or visit Alicante Town Hall - a baroque building constructed in the 18th century.
There are also many religious monuments in the city, including the oldest church in Alicante - the Santa Maria Basilica - and the Santa Faz Monastery.
Architecture buffs may also enjoy a tour of the Central Market, which has many modernist-inspired elements, and the Alicante Provincial Council, which is housed in a neo-classical palace.
Those eager to explore Alicante can rent Costa Blanca villas in La Nucia, which is around 45 minutes away by car.
The inland village has retained much of its old Spanish charm and is home to a weekly flea market which may be great for souvenir shopping.
