See a 'spectacular battle' on a Costa Blanca holiday
This time the battle is merely for entertainment purposes and to honour the regional patron St George in Alcoi.
For the liveliest celebrations, Whatsonwhen urges visitors to travel to the outdoor squares of Placa Emili Sala and la Placa de Dins.
Taking place on April 24th - the day after St George's Day - the battle comprises "large-scale explosions, smoke and screams and follows the progression of the initial 13th-century fight between Moors and Christians".
Prior to the big battle, the historical re-enactment sees the two respective armies march through Alcoi preparing for battle and sounding their drums - and holiday makers renting a villa in the peaceful Jalon Valley can escape back to tranquillity after watching the events unfold.
Jalon Valley offers rest and relaxation in a serene setting but those seeking blood and thunder will find Alcoi not far away.
