See Alicante's bonfires on a Costa Blanca villa holiday

There will be some memorable entertainment on offer to people taking Costa Blanca villa holidays this month when Alicante hosts a festival to celebrate the arrival of summer.

The Hogueras de San Juan bonfires fiesta will take place in the popular holiday destination from June 20th to 24th.

According to the Spanish Tourist Office, thousands of people gather in the streets of Alicante every year to join in with the celebrations and experience an atmosphere full of "music, colour, fireworks and extravagance".

The festival begins on June 20th with the construction of the bonfires, which are often decorated with humorous cardboard figures and effigies.

People enjoying Costa Blanca villa holidays will also be able to see musical parades, dancing, fireworks displays and other spectacles leading up to the main event at midnight on June 24th, when the bonfires are lit.

Following the climax of the festival, a fireworks competition gets underway on El Postiguet beach and runs from June 25th to 29th.

Holiday makers staying in Costa Blanca villas will also be able to visit the centre of Alicante after the fiesta to explore a medieval market.
