Religious play brings culture to Costa Blanca holiday
A beautiful medieval drama that is performed inside the Santa Maria Basilica, the event celebrates Assumption Day and has been recognised as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.
The play has a religious theme and depicts the Virgin's assumption which is referred to in Spain as "dormiciori".
This is when Mary's body was sent to heaven and taking a Costa Blanca villa holiday in August will give travellers a chance to see the play that was first performed in the 15th Century.
About 300 actors and singers take part in the play and the performance is attended by most of the town.
The play opens with the first act on the first evening and the second act is performed on the second evening while a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the streets.
