Holidays to Spain 'still top option for Brits'

With the 'great school summer getaway' set to begin this weekend, holidays to Spain remain the most popular option among British travellers, it has been revealed.

Some 1.9 million people will be heading overseas between July 23rd and 26th, according to Abta - The Travel Association, with a large portion of this group heading to Spanish hotspots.

Costa Blanca holidays and other breaks in mainland Spain are continuing to prove popular, while the Canary and the Balearic islands have also been selling well.

Abta revealed that Turkey holidays and trips to Greece have been attracting strong interest from short-haul travellers, while Florida is among the top long-haul destinations.

Britons heading to the eurozone this summer are set to see the benefit of the pound's recent resurgence against the single European currency.

Abta chairman John McEwan said: "I am delighted to see hundreds of thousands of us heading overseas this weekend, the traditional curtain raiser to the summer season.

"With prices having fallen in the eurozone and an improved exchange rate on last year, holidaymakers will get a pleasant surprise when they arrive in [their] resort and head for local restaurants and bars."
