People planning Costa Blanca holidays this year will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of Alicante.
The Spanish Tourist Office encouraged visitors to explore the city's historic quarter at the foot of the Santa Barbara castle, which it described as "a silent witness to the numerous civilisations to have settled here".
Several sites in the area offer an insight into Alicante's religions and architectural heritage, such as the boulevard known locally as Explanada de Espana.
This location is a popular gathering point for local residents.
Holiday makers staying in Costa Blanca villas over the coming months will also have several opportunities to attend some events that represent the city's history and culture.
The most popular celebrations include the Moors and Christians fiestas and the Night of San Juan.
As well as absorbing some local history and culture, travellers who visit Alicante during a holiday to Spain this year will be able to try out some of the area's many golf courses or hit the beach for some relaxing days by the sea.
