Experience La Tomatina on a Costa Blanca holiday

Travellers planning Costa Blanca holidays in August might be tempted to arrange a trip to the small village of Bunol to take part in one of Spain's most famous events.

La Tomatina takes place every year on the last Wednesday in August, which falls on the 25th this summer.

Tens of thousands of people gather in the town to take part in a giant food fight, flinging about 150,000 tomatoes at one another over the course of a couple of hours.

A ham is placed at the top of a large, greased pole in the centre of Bunol on the morning of the event and the tomato throwing begins as soon as someone is able to pull the piece of meat down.

People planning Costa Blanca villa breaks and other holidays to Spain in August will also be able to enjoy the events and entertainment that take place in the town during the week of La Tomatina.

There will be live music, parades, dancing and fireworks displays, as well as a paella cooking contest on the night before the tomato fight.
