Cuevas del Rodeo future confirmed, Costa Blanca

The Cuevas del Rodeo cave houses in Rojales - a popular attraction for holiday makers to the Costa Blanca - are to be kept open to visitors, despite recent local newspaper reports.

Graham Cheater, an artist and musician who works at the houses built into the rock, which also form a popular music venue, has told the Costa Blanca Leader of a conversation with local councillor Sylvia Pizarro last week.

According to Ms Pizarro, the council will be merely redeveloping the caves to include other tourist magnets such as an open-air theatre - the caves themselves will therefore not be closed.

There are also plans for an annual Jazz festival to be held at the site, the newspaper reports.

This month, the Claudion Blues Band, Proyecto Nardis and Moggio are all scheduled to perform at the Cuevas del Rodeo.

Mr Cheater added: "The information that the funding to the caves was not available, led to the perception amongst many of the artists at the caves, that to remove funding would surely bring the demise of the caves and therefore this would eventually lead to closure.

"Hence there being recent newspaper articles 'Help save the caves.' I am happy to hear Mrs Pizarro's comments that they have no such proposal."

As well as music, the caves also offer exhibitions of paintings, photography and sculpture to holiday makers.
