A visit to Altea, Costa Blanca

Although Benidorm remains a traditional hub for mass tourism, most of the thousands of British holidaymakers who will travel there this summer will not even be aware that a small fishing town nearly untouched by the tourist trade can be found nearby.

Altea, separated from Benidorm by the Sierra Helada mountain, is a peaceful hilltop dwelling that enjoys a quiet, relaxed atmosphere all year round.

The traditional cobblestone streets meander down towards the sea, where visitors can watch the catches being unloaded from the fishermens' boats each day.

The most famous landmark in Altea is the very unusual church on the Plaza de Nuestra Senora del Consuelo, whose cupolas are bedecked with bright blue and white tiling. There are also several wide pebble beaches nearby.

Probably the best time for tourists to make a visit is Tuesday, when the weekly market is held, with local craftsmen and artists hawking their wares.

Upcoming festivals in Altea will be held on July 23rd and 25th (San Jaime), and from August 1st to August 14th (San Lorenzo).
