Take cash and plastic when on a Costa Blanca villa holiday

People planning a Costa Blanca villa holiday would be wise to take a mix of foreign currency along with their credit card, one expert has advised.

Head of Post Office Travel Services Sarah Munro said it was important to take cash to pay for expenses such as taxis and eating out as well as some form of credit card to "cover all eventualities".

Ms Munro said a surprising number of people visiting more "far flung" destinations get caught out when they find their card is not accepted.

She recommended that security-conscious travellers could avoid the risk of carrying large amounts of cash by using a pre-paid card which can be loaded with the currency before departure.

"It's a really flexible means of carrying money and you don’t need ID to cash funds," she said.

"Best of all it is very secure as it is not linked to your bank account and can be quickly replaced if lost or stolen, a key consideration on a long trip where theft can ruin a holiday."

Ms Munro urged people who prefer to use credit cards while on holiday to choose a scheme that does not charge them commission for overseas usage.

According to research from Santander, over half of Britons travelling abroad took cash as their primary payment method while on holiday.
