The Fortresses of Corfu: Corfu
The two ancient fortresses on the peaks of Corfu Town are a must see attraction for anyone visiting the Greek Island of Corfu.
The first fortifications for the old fortress were started in the sixth century AD when, following the destruction of the ancient city of Corcyra, the locals were forced to abandon the city and to settle on the two capes.
Today the castle sits over Esplanade and connects with the town via a 60 metre iron bridge; this used to be wooden and could be drawn up to isolate the fortress under siege.
But the old fortress is not the only historic fortification in Corfu, holidaymakers can also see the so-called new fortress, which was built by the Venetians on the second cape.
It was built near the old harbour between 1576 and 1645 and boasting a network of chambers and galleries it was a strong point in the town's defence and it gives visitors a real sense of the history surrounding Corfu.
Visitors who decide to make the trip from their villa can also see the winged lion of St Mark, the symbol of Venice, on the two doors of the fortress.
