Greek tourism grows again, Corfu
The tourism boom in Greece seems set to continue in the long term, with the release of new figures last week.
Rises of fully 5.95 per cent in the first half of 2007 were recorded by the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE), which reported last Thursday.
Stavros Andreadis, chairman of SETE, told reporters that "if the rate of growth remains through the end of the year, Greek tourism over the period 2004-2007 will have recorded a 24 per cent cumulative increase".
He termed this a "spectacular result", and said that the figures show "that the growth potential is enormous".
According to Dow Jones, Greece attracted a total of 16 million tourists in 2006, who spent an estimated 12 billion. Both figures seem set to rise for this year.
Tourism in Greece is very important to the nation's economy, with it accounting for almost 20 per cent of gross domestic product and one in six jobs.
