Corfu 'deeply connected' to Greek mythology
According to an article in the Irish Independent, the Ionian island is "deeply connected" to Greek mythology.
"It is the place where the god of sea, Poseidon, brought his wife Korkyra and the poet Homer recognised it as a paradise in the Odyssey," it states.
Holiday makers can take historical tours of the island, perhaps renting cars or bikes to get around and see the major sights.
The newspaper points out that one of the main cultural landmarks in Corfu is the Moni Paleokastritsa monastery, which offers some fantastic views from its position high on a hilltop.
Families planning some day trips during their Corfu villa holiday could stay in the village of Sgombou, which is close to Corfu Town and within driving distance of some of the other resorts further north.
It is also ideal for those seeking a quiet, relaxing break, as it is surrounded by olive and citrus groves and is set back from some of the busier towns.
