Corfu celebrates Easter with smashing pots

On Easter Saturday the inhabitants of the island celebrate by throwing any breakables they can get their hands on, which may help to relieve some frustration as they will have just observed a 40-day fast, according to What's on When.

The tradition originated in Corfu town but has now extended across the island and it is derived from the Venetians who would throw their possessions out of their windows in New Year's Day in order to receive new ones.

The Greeks use pots and jugs full of water and Easter is their most important holiday.

If a little quiet is required after such a noisy celebration, tourists may find they want to visit some of the many historical and architectural sight dotted around Corfu.
