Agios Spyridon: Corfu
The Church of Agios Spyridon is the most famous church in Corfu and at over 400 years old it is a sight not to be missed by holidaymakers visiting the region.
Agios Spyridon is the patron saint of the island, and it is to him that the church is dedicated. He was a shepherd in Cyprus before becoming a bishop and is buried in the church.
His relics are stored in the church after they were brought from Constantinople and every December 12th they are paraded through the town on the feast of the patron saint.
Located in Corfu Town, the church was built in 1589 to replace the older church of Sorokos that was destroyed during the building of the town walls.
Despite its age, the building is a spectacular site and has the tallest bell-tower on the whole island.
The tower has a unique red dome and clock similar to that of the Orthodox Church of Agios Georginos in Venice.
Visiting the site gives holidaymakers a unique view into the religion and practices of the people of Corfu, whilst viewing some fantastic architecture.
