Mont St Michel 'like a fairytale castle'
In an article for the Daily Mail, travel journalist Jo Kessel said she headed towards the famous landmark during a family break in Brittany.
She said her young daughter described the Mont St Michel as a "fairytale castle" and insisted the child was right.
"On the winding uphill walk through narrow, cobbled streets towards the gothic monastery, the children are transfixed by window displays of knights in shining armour and weaponry," Ms Kessel wrote.
She said the sweet smell of buttery biscuits and cider was in the air as visitors made their way to the top, peering through look-out holes to catch a glimpse of the "breathtaking" view on their way.
The Independent newspaper reported recently that work is underway to restore the Mont St Michel to its original form as an island separated from the land by the sea.
At present, the rocky outcrop is now permanently joined to the mainland via sprawling mud flats.
Families adding a trip to the Mont St Michel to their holiday itinerary may wish to rent a Brittany villa in Huenan, as the monument is accessible by car from here.
