Brittany's Mont St Michel to become an island once again
Once a rocky island three miles from the shore, it is now permanently joined to the mainland via the sprawling mud flats.
But according to the Independent, an ambitious new project is underway to restore the isle and separate it from the land once again.
A new dam two miles away at the mouth of the river Couesnon will capture, store and release water to create a series of flushing actions that will slowly sweep away the silt between the Mont St Michel and the mainland.
Over time, the landmark will be returned to its former glory and the road causeway leading up to it will be replaced by a bridge.
Visitors will reach the island by travelling across this bridge on foot or by shuttle bus, as cars and coaches will park in a designated area half a mile inland.
Families hoping to visit the Mont St Michel on a Brittany villa holiday could stay in Huenan, which is a short drive away.
It is also just five kilometres from the historic town of Dinan with its medieval centre and its wide variety of shops and restaurants.
