Your holiday in Bordeaux
The wine-producing heritage of Bordeaux is simply inescapable on a visit to a visit to this magical corner of France - from the atmospheric wineries of the city, to the rows of vines magnificently lining the banks of the Gironde estuary. Sitting amid the beautiful scenery of the Aquitaine region, Bordeaux offers absorbing history, stunning architecture, world-class shopping, and mouth-watering cuisine – all within reach of lush, beautiful countryside and incredible, vast sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast.
On the beach
Bordeaux is part of the Aquitaine region, which is famous for its fantastic sandy beaches. Within driving distance of the city itself, you will find seemingly unending sands stretching 270 kilometres along the Atlantic coast. Surfers flock to the area to catch the ocean waves, and the soft sand dunes are perfect if you want to spend your days relaxing in the sun. All along the coast, you will find pleasant and stylish seaside resorts with plenty of watersports and activities, which are particularly popular with visitors from other parts of France.
Local cuisine
If you’re a wine lover, you’re sure to find a great Bordeaux to complement the rich and diverse blend of gourmet food from the Gironde, Landes and Périgord regions. More than 700 million bottles of magnificent red wine are produced in the area’s 9,000 wineries each year, making Bordeaux the second largest wine growing area in the world. The wine perfectly complements traditional local dishes, particularly the popular and delicious entrecôte marchand de vin – rib steak cooked in Bordeaux wine gravy. In Bordeaux itself, food lovers will love the restaurants of the Saint-Remi district, whilst there is also a vast array of excellent seafood and traditional cuisine on offer.
Retail therapy
If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your holiday money, Bordeaux offers some of the best opportunities for shopping to be found anywhere in France. Visit the area of the city known as the ‘Golden Triangle’, marked out by the roads surrounding it – the Allées de Tourny, the Cours de l’Intendance and the Cours Clemenceau. This area contains some of the most famous names of haute couture, perfect for window shopping and admiring the latest collections at least! Visit one of the many wineries if you’d like to take home a few bottles of the excellent local wine – the definitive souvenir of a holiday to the Bordeaux region.
Atmospheric evenings
Evenings out in Bordeaux often echo those of nearby Spain, with both young and old pouring out onto the streets to while away the hours dining and talking in the area’s many excellent restaurants. If you are visiting the city of Bordeaux, there are plenty of cinemas and theatres to entertain you either before or after you finish eating (many locals don’t eat until around 9pm or later in the evening), and make sure you end your night with one last drink in one of the lively cafes and bars, where you will be welcome well into the early hours.
