Three cultures festival, Frigiliana, Andalucia
A new festival, aimed at combining and bringing together the various cultural influences that united to form the Andalucia of today, has been celebrated at the town of Frigiliana this week.
The Festival Tres Culturas (Three Cultures Festival) - which commemorates the social contribution of the Jews, Moors and Christians throughout Andalucian history - climaxes tomorrow.
The brainchild of composer Javier Paxarino, the first festival was held as recently as last year.
Falconry demonstrations, food stalls, craft workshops, theatrical productions for all the family - and a bit of belly-dancing - transform the town over the four-day festival, as the "three cultures" come together as one.
Frigiliana itself, a small town which lies among the Sierra Tejeda-Almijara mountains, provides a perfect venue for the festival.
The town was occupied by the Moors for centuries - during which period the three cultures lived together in comparative harmony - before the town was re-taken by the Catholics in 1485, and sectarian conflict commenced.
