Patron saint day in Malaga brings culture to Andalucia holiday
The Festival of Saint Cyriacus and Saint Paula takes place in Malaga each June to celebrate the canonising of two of Malaga's patron saints.
Canonised in 305 AD, Saint Cyriacus and Saint Paula are celebrated on June 18th in one of Malaga's important local holidays.
A religious service held at the Iglesia de los Santos Martires celebrates the way the saints regained Malaga from the Arabs in 1487 prompting the Catholic Kings to write to the Pope and inform him of the progress made by Christianity.
As a thank-you, the Pope proposed that they were the new patron saints of the city and in 1548 a temple was built in the area in their honour.
Religious services occur throughout Malaga in celebration of the event and travellers can learn about the area's rich history while staying in a family villa in Andalucia.
