New breeding centres for Iberian Lynx
Currently Andalucia is the only place where the Lynx is found in any large numbers and has been the only autonomous community with its own captive breeding program.
There are only an estimated 160 of the animals believed left in the wild so news that an agreement to breed the animals singed in Seville this week between the Environment Ministries of Spain and Portugal and the governments of Andalucia, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha is welcome.
According to the Daily Telegraph the project in Donana now boasts 37 animals, 11 of which were born in the last two years and the project aims to reach 60 breeding adults by 2010.
A lack of rabbits has been cited as one of the reasons behind the lynx's demise but with new breeding centres planned, the numbers of lynx are expected to increase.
