Malaga 'has much to offer'
In an article for the Guardian, Stephen Emms said it is a great city to do "on the cheap" thanks to its well-priced yet authentically Spanish food and drink.
He said tourists can dine on traditional tapas and fresh seafood in local restaurants and enjoy drinks in shady cafes.
There are also numerous free galleries and attractions in Malaga, which holiday makers can explore "in between mouthfuls of tapas and glugs of wine".
Among these is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba - which is free after 2pm on a Sunday - and the Gibralfaro Castle.
The Paseo del Parque tropical garden close to the port is also free to visit and is home to rare plants and exotic birds.
Those eager to explore Malaga could rent an Andalucia villa in Nerja, which is around 45 minutes away.
Writing for the Telegraph recently, journalist Natalie Paris described Malaga as an "overlooked treasure" that is well worth a visit.
