Feria de Malaga, Andalucia
Andalucia's biggest party begins at midnight on August 11th.
The Feria de Malaga, held in the city centre, is a week-long festival. By day, locals and visitors line the streets in their thousands to watch the costumed parades.
The festivities are known for being one of the most exciting events on the Andalucian social calendar, with last year's celebrations being opened by the city's most famous son, actor Antonio Banderas.
Andalucia is famous in Spain for its horses and riding schools, and this is reflected by many participants in the parade being mounted. Malaga's famous horse drawn carriages are also appropriately decked out for the occasion in period attire.
Food stalls, offering regional delicacies and local sweet wines and sherries, form a big part in the festival. Children are also well catered for, with street entertainers, Punch and Judy shows (known as 'el teatro de titeres' in Spanish) and mini-circuses also easy to find.
In the evenings, celebrations move to the more than 200 pavillions erected in the Cortijo de Torres, south west of the city centre, where both traditional and modern musical acts perform. There is also a firework display planned to mark the climax of the festivities on 19th August.
The festival originally comemmorated the transfer of the city from Moorish rule: King Fernando having entered the city to mass celebrations on 19th August 1487. It has been celebrated in its present form for well over a century.
