Fair of Virgen de las Nieves and San Roque, Andalucia
The pretty Andalucian town of Torrox will welcome visitors to its saint's day fair on August 5th.
Festivities are held jointly in honour of the town's patron saints the Virgin de las Nieves (Virgin of the Snows) and San Roque. The town also contains a convent and a shrine dedicated to the respective patrons.
Torrox, around 45 kilometres from Malaga, claims to have "the best climate in Europe". Surrounded by mountains on one side and the sea on another, the town offers a host of attractions to visitors, although it is generally untouched by mass tourism.
Containing medieval, Moorish and even Roman architecture, the white-walled town is known as being one of the most beautiful in the region.
The cuisine of the immediate region, while generally typical of Andalucia, does include some very local delicacies, simple peasant food such as "migas cortijeras" (a pork and garlic dish) and "papas a lo pobre" ("poor man's potatoes", cooked with peppers and onions).
