Catch La Vuelta a España cycle race on Andalucia holidays this August

Holidaymakers staying in Andalucia villas this August have the chance to visit the city of Granada for the start of the annual Vuelta a España cycle race.

Crowds of spectators are expected to line the streets as this picturesque city hosts the opening time trial and the start of Stage 2 over the weekend of 30-31 Aug 08.

The time trial will see teams racing a seven kilometre course around the winding streets on the Saturday, with riders reaching high speeds in a bid to claim the coveted leader’s jersey for the first time.

Teams will then set off on the Sunday for Stage 2 – a 167-kilometre ride from Granada to Jaén. This route will see cyclists take on the first mountain pass of the race – the challenging Las Encebras climb.

The national cycle race of Spain, La Vuelta has visited Granada many times during its history which stretches back as early as 1935. This year sees the city host the start of the race for the second year in a row.

Granada is just a one-and-a-half hour drive from the coastal town of Nerja. This offers those staying in Andalucia villas the perfect chance to combine relaxation on the beach with the excitement of a top cycling event – as well as the opportunity for a little sightseeing.
