The Independent's Louise France spent a week on an Andalucia holiday, walking between picturesque white-washed villages and practising her navigation skills.
Such an independent holiday offers travellers a sense of freedom, with nobody giving directions or telling tourists what to do, she suggests.
"There are times when - half-way up a mountain in the middle of remotest Andalucia - I feel as though I'm back at school, playing hooky on a field trip," Ms France says.
She adds that the smell of wild thyme on the breeze and the sound of mountain streams give Andalucia villa holidays the feel of being on the set of The Sound of Music.
