Why not visit an historic lighthouse while in Algarve villas?

Families hoping to gain insight into the history of Portugal while staying in Algarve villas will now have more opportunities to do so.

The six lighthouses of the popular holiday region are to be available to the public to explore for no charge, Lusa News Agency reported.

Each facility will be open for people to visit between 2pm and 5pm, local time, every Wednesday, with guests being accompanied on their trip by the lighthouse keepers.

Maritime commander Marques Ferreira commented: "It will be for an experimental period of a year, after which we will evaluate if it is a measure to be continued."

Families have the choice to explore such facilities as the 28-metre high Sao Vicente in Vila do Bipo, which first appeared on the Algarve coastline in 1846, or sample the more recent Vila Real de Santo Antonio, which was erected in 1923.

People occupying villas in the Algarve during the winter months can also enjoy taking part in a variety of watersports during their getaway, Hugo Nascimento, sun and sea product manager at the Algarve Promotion Bureau, recently acknowledged.
