Tourists urged to visit Alentejo on Algarve holidays
A holiday in the Algarve can be taken by a number of people looking for somewhere peaceful to relax for a week or two.
Those who wish to take this to an extreme by visiting a spot where other tourists are rarely even seen may like to take one writer's advice and head to the Alentejo region.
Sarah Shuckburgh, author of a piece for the Daily Mail, highlights the area as one where beauty and tranquility are the name of the game.
She says two inland spots known as Vila Vicosa and Costa Vicentina National Park are both worth a trip.
The form is a "small, glittering city in which everything is made of local marble", with the must-see sight arguably the Duke's Palace.
Ms Shuckburgh recalls sipping coffee in Vila Vicosa's main square and climbing a hill to visit its castle.
Gill Charlton, also writing for the newspaper, recently named Carvoeiro as one of her favourite holiday spots in the Algarve.
