Take a trip to Alentejo on Algarve villa holidays

Algarve villa holidays could provide the perfect opportunity to visit Portugal's famous wine region, Alentejo.

The area is situated north of Algarve and is a great destination for wine lovers, according to Katherine Donnelly of the Irish Independent.

She notes: "Algarve, as a favourite holiday destination, is inextricably linked to another 'A' word, Alentejo."

The region has flourished in terms of winemaking since 1974 and now accounts for 45 per cent of all Portuguese wine.

Alentejo's wines tend to match the local cuisine, which is focused on cheese, olive oil, pata negra cured ham and an array of herbs and spices - making excursions to this part of Portugal ideal for food lovers, too.

"Grape varieties may sound unfamiliar, but many are not," Ms Donnelly explains, adding that Aragonez is another name for the well-known red Tempranillo, which is what Rioja is based on.

Destinations in Alentejo that are easily accessible for those staying in an Algarve villa include Beja.
