Spend time in 'delightful' Faro on an Algarve holiday
Most people enjoying Algarve villa holidays see Faro as a gateway to the beaches and golf courses along the coast, one travel journalist has pointed out.
However, in an article for the Independent, Cathy Packe claimed that the capital of the Portuguese region actually has a lot to offer visitors.
She said an atmospheric old town, lively bars and great fish restaurants are just some of its main attractions.
The harbour is the main focus in Faro and from here the pedestrianised quarter and the original walled city are within walking distance.
Ms Packe insisted that the best time to visit Faro is in September when the weather still warm but most of the tourist crowds have left.
Those planning a last minute summer Algarve holiday could therefore take a day trip to Faro to take in its sights.
Algarve villas in Loule are just 20 minutes away from Faro so could be a good choice.
With its ancient Arabic walls and castle ruins, the town will appeal to those hoping to catch a glimpse of Portugal's rich history.
