Sandcastle spectacular brings Algarve holidays to life

Building sandcastles is always fun for those enjoying Algarve holidays and to get some top construction tips families should head to Armacao de Pera.

Every year the resort hosts the FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival and the huge creations on show are nothing short of astounding.

This year, the theme is discoveries and the sculptures will take visitors on an exciting journey through prehistoric times to the middle ages and into the present, charting some of the exciting breakthroughs made along the way.

A team of 60 sand artists have used around 35,000 tonnes of sand to create the unique displays, which are spread across 15,000 square metres of land.

The festival will be open each day and into the evening until October 22nd.

Those visiting after dark will be able to see the sculptures in all their illuminated glory, although they may wish to view them again in the daylight to really take in their intricate details.

Families planning Algarve villa holidays could arrange to stay in Armacao de Pera where they will be close to the festival.

The resort has a beautiful old town where restaurants serve traditional Portuguese specialities, as well as a modern promenade where holiday makers can enjoy some top seafood.
