Rent an Algarve villa and go birdwatching
The Algarve may be renowned for its championship golf courses and its golden sandy beaches, but soon birdwatchers could be flocking to the Portuguese region.
According to the Portugal News Online, a new campaign is being launched by the Algarve Regional Tourism Entity to promote birdwatching in the area.
It believes that the activity could become extremely popular in the Algarve and it is hoping to establish it as one of Europe's premier birdwatching destinations.
A study into the region's bird life found that there are five key areas of interest for those keen to see the Algarve's birds in their natural habitat.
These include the Sapal Nature Reserve and the Salgados Lagoon in Gale.
The same study also found that there are four million dedicated birdwatchers in the UK, so Algarve holidays could appeal to this group.
Families can rent their own private Algarve villas in Gale, which is part of Albufeira, and get out their binoculars.
After spending an afternoon birdwatching they could head into the centre of Albufeira, where a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants can be found.
According to Algarve Birdwatching, which runs birdwatching trips, some of the species that can be found in the region include little bitterns, purple herons and stone curlews.
