Relax on Cacela Velha beach on an Algarve holiday
Those heading off on Algarve villa holidays will have no shortage of beautiful beaches to choose from.
But a visit to Cacela Velha beach in the easternmost part of the region may be a highlight of their Portuguese trip.
This particular stretch of the coast features in a list of the top ten beaches in Europe to explore on foot, as compiled by the Guardian's Isabel Choat.
She claims that Cacela Velha is a "charming" village set on a hilltop overlooking the Ria Formosa - a system of barrier islands.
"It's a hidden gem on this relatively built-up stretch of coast and the beach beyond it is one of the most unspoilt in southern Portugal," the writer states.
Ms Choat said the beach is very tranquil and has something of a desert island feel, with storks and eagles occupying the lagoon.
Cacela Velha is not far from the Castro Marim Leisure Resort, so holiday makers could book Algarve villas here.
The resort is also a great base for those hoping to fit in a few rounds of golf during their break, as there is a 27-hole course on site.
Castro Marim is also close to the Spanish border where there are more world-class courses waiting to be played.
