Golf 'is a highlight of holidays in the Algarve'

Golf is one of the major reasons to book a holiday in the Algarve, with the region offering top courses and facilities to players of all standards.

Nuno Aires, president of the Algarve Tourism Board, says the golf breaks market is currently growing.

"We have more than 30 golf courses. We are well known internationally. We are well known for the quality of the golf, the service that we provide and the weather is normally good," he explains.

Indeed, some sportsmen may consider southern Portugal to be one of the world's top venues for great golf.

And those looking to stay in comfort could book a villa in the Algarve, with many properties just a short distance from one of the area's courses or clubhouses.

The region was recently named by travelsupermarket.com as one of the best ten places to take a holiday in 2011, along with Turkey, Florida and the Costa Blanca.
